Drama Therapy & Movement
Drama Therapy is offered to children and adults, individuals and families. Treatment approaches range from subtle techniques to elaborate dramatic enactments and performances. The method of treatment is chosen based on the clients’ needs and goals. Drama therapy brings to surface unconscious or repressed parts of the self for the purpose of processing internal conflicts and improving day to day functioning. It also enables clients to experientially move through grief, past trauma, or other areas where they have previously felt stuck.

Highlights of the year include:
- There are several families who have participated in drama therapy processes as a means of working through past trauma and neglect.
- One child client played out an imaginary situation which brought to light a mistaken belief that she had about her mother, which she was unable to verbally communicate to her parents. The belief was then explored, reframed and shared with her mother.
- As a result, the child’s mother suddenly understood why the child had been behaving in certain ways; the confusion was sorted out, the child’s behaviour ended and the relationship between the two of them improved significantly.
- Expressive therapies (art, psychodrama, puppet play, doll play, story telling, sand tray etc.) were recommended in 23% of referrals involving children.
- An average improvement of 9.64 was noted on the Global Assessment of Functioning scale in individuals receiving expressive therapies. This demonstrates a marked improvement in overall functioning of children and adults involved in expressive therapies, including Drama Therapy.
